28 November 2001 ASRT to Waive Dues of Deployed Military Members The ASRT Board of Directors has voted to waive the membership renewal dues of any ASRT member deployed for U.S. military service after Sept. 11, 2001, as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. The waiver applies to R.T.s who are deployed by the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force or Marine Corps. It also applies to ASRT members who are activated by the Reserves or the National Guard. "Hundreds of ASRT members are active-duty members of the military or serve as reservists or members of National Guard units," said ASRT Board Chairman Michael DelVecchio, B.S., R.T.(R). "Should any of them be called upon to serve as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, they will not have to pay their ASRT membership dues for the duration of their deployment." Mr. DelVecchio said the dues waiver is designed to offer additional support to military R.T.s who are called overseas or called to active duty. "Although small, it will be one less thing for these R.T.s to worry about," he said. To qualify for the dues waiver, the radiologic technologist must have been an ASRT member as of Sept. 11, 2001, and must be deployed for military service after Sept. 11, 2001. When members who meet these criteria receive their next dues renewal notice from ASRT, they should return it to ASRT with a copy of their deployment orders. The ASRT then will waive the member's dues for the following year. The dues waiver applies only to renewals of membership, not to new ASRT memberships. "Message from America" Will Send Holiday Greetings to Active Duty Military Personnel In cooperation with the DoD, "Message From America" will enable all Americans to videotape holiday greetings and expressions of support for the men and women of the Armed Forces. Beginning November 26 and continuing through December 31, Americans may visit any Circuit City Superstore nationwide to videotape 30-second messages. These messages will be sent to the USO and Armed Forces Network to be shared with military personnel at military installations around the world. In addition, CBS will edit the public greetings into montages, which will appear as public service announcements during prime time, sports, and other programs broadcast on CBS, UPN and MTV. Special invitations to record messages are being extended to fire and police departments across the country, military veterans, local American Red Cross chapters and Salvation Army branches, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and other youth organizations. As a special part of this program, family members of currently deployed military personnel with military IDs will be able to record personal messages of up to five minutes in length for their loved ones. These messages will then be transferred to DVD and given to the family in mailing envelopes. Family members may mail them directly to their loved ones on active duty. Families with military IDs may record their messages at any Circuit City Superstore or at approximately 100 of the nation’s military installations. For more information, visit URL Deleted. AN ENCOURAGING WORD "Dear Dad, "We are still at sea. The remainder of our port visits have all been cancelled. We have spent every day since the attacks going back and forth within imaginary boxes drawn in the ocean, standing high-security watches, and trying to make the best of it. We have seen the articles and the photographs, and they are sickening. Being isolated, I don't think we appreciate the full scope of what is happening back home, but we are definitely feeling the effects. "About two hours ago, we were hailed by a German Navy destroyer, Lutjens, requesting permission to pass close by our port side. Strange, since we're in the middle of an empty ocean, but the captain acquiesced and we prepared to render them honors from our bridgewing. As they were making their approach, our conning officer used binoculars and announced that Lutjens was flying not the German, but the American flag. As she came alongside us, we saw the American flag flying half-mast and her entire crew topside standing at silent, rigid attention in their dress uniforms. "They had made a sign that was displayed on her side that read, "We Stand By You." There was not a dry eye on the bridge as they stayed alongside us for a few minutes and saluted. It was the most powerful thing I have seen in my life. The German Navy did an incredible thing for this crew, and it has truly been the highest point in the days since the attacks. It's amazing to think that only half-century ago things were quite different. "After Lutjens pulled away, the Officer of the Deck, who had been planning to get out later this year, turned to me and said, 'I'm staying Navy.' "I'll write you when I know more about when I'll be home, but this is it for now. "Love you guys." And here's a picture of what that scene looked like:
