Frequently Asked Questions...

What is the history of the Saratoga?

During World War II

Best Answer...

Answer:

CV-3 USS SARATOGA was one of only three prewar fleet carriers to survive the war and the only one of the three not to have originally been designed as a carrier. The other two were the light carrier CV-4 USS RANGER and the Yorktown-class fleet carrier CV-6 USS ENTERPRISE.

As of December 7, 1941 the Sara had completed a complete overhual at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington and was in San Diego (at North Island) where she was to embark a squadron of Marine fighters for transport to Pearl and then Wake Island. The Big E and the Lex (CV-2 USS LEXINGTON, Sara's sister ship and the lead ship of the Lexington-class) were the only other carriers in the Pacific on that day. Sara would arrive at Pearl December 15, 1941. She'd recieve her first war wound while patroling the water's of the Hawaiian Islands with the Big E January 11, 1942 when torpedoed by the I-16 which would force her first to Oahu for temporary repairs and then back to Bremerton for permanent repairs.

During the war she'd see action at Guadalcanal before a torpedo attack by I-26 forced her to return to Pearl for repairs. She would then take part in the actions at Bougainville, Rabaul, and the Gilberts before escorting the transports ferrying troops to Makin and Tarawa. This was then followed by an overhaul in San Francisco after which she and the light carriers CVL-23 USS PRINCETON and CVL-27 USS LANGLEY took part in the action at the Marshalls.

For more try checking the DANFS (Dictionary of Amercans Naval Fighting Ships) entry on the Sara, listed below through Have Gray & Underway. The NavSource entry, also below, may be of some interest to you as well.
